Heart Valve Repair / Surgery

Hawaii Heart Valve Surgery

You may have discussed heart valve repair with your Hawaii cardiologist.

Heart valve repair surgery is a procedure in which the surgeon can reshape or fix the mitral or tricuspid heart valves. Heart valve surgery is done to fix the regurgitation or the backwards flow of blood within the heart. For heart valve repair the surgeon will either make an incision through the breast bone or an incision on the side of the chest to gain access to the heart. The heart valve is then manipulated and restructured. One of the major benefits of heart valve repair is the avoidance of blood thinners. Usually blood thinners are required when mechanical heart valves are used during replacement procedures instead of heart valve repair.
