A Specialized Program for Adults with Congenital Heart Disease

More than a million people with a congenital heart condition are living in the United States of which well over 4,000 are estimated to currently live in Hawaii. Due to advancements in diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects life expectancy has increased dramatically. As a result, there are now more adults than children living with a congenital heart defect.

Because of the complexity of these heart conditions, it has been well recognized that specialized programs are needed to care for adults with congenital heart disease. Over the past decade, specialized centers have been developed across the country to care for these patients and help with this transition. In order to provide comprehensive, specialized and easily accessible care for this unique patient population, the Hawaii’s Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) Clinic has been formed.

This clinic provides care by cardiologists and cardiac surgeons who are familiar with the pathology, anatomy, and social issues that affect adult patients with congenital heart disease. All patients are welcome, from simple repaired defects to complex, un-repaired conditions.

Patients are managed by our local multi-disciplinary team, with a variety of local experts in field of pulmonary hypertension, high risk obstetrics and pre-conception counseling are. However, if needed, patients may be referred to mainland institutions who are recognized leaders in the field of congenital heart disease.
