Carotid Endarterectomy

Carotid Endarterectomy in Hawaii

If your Hawaii physician has discussed issues with your carotid arteries you may be a candidate for carotid endarterectomy.

Carotid endarterectomy is a surgical procedure that corrects stenosis (narrowing) in the carotid arteries of the neck. Plaque or blockages can develop within these arteries causing increase risk of stroke or transient ischemic attacks (TIA). During carotid endarterectomy removal of the plaque is done by making an incision in the neck at the area where the plaque is occurring. Carotid endarterectomy usually only requires a stay in the hospital for a brief amount of time, sometimes patients can go home the following day. Carotid endarterectomy may be considered if you are at risk of developing a stroke or TIA due to the amount of blockages in the neck arteries.
