Aortic and Mitral Valvuloplasty

Aortic and Mitral Valvuloplasty in Hawaii

Aortic and mitral valvuloplasty is a procedure that your Hawaii cardiologist performs to address stenosis or narrowing of the valve. The aortic, pulmonic and mitral valves can be widened using catheters and balloons inserted through the leg vessels. Of the two different procedures, aortic valvuloplasty of the aortic valve is usually not curable, as it commonly leads to recurrence of narrowing of the aortic valve within one year. However, a subset of patients may benefit from this procedure in stead of undergoing aortic valve replacement surgery. Undergoing aortic or mitral valvuloplasty can make symptoms of valve stenosis, improve even if is for only a short period of time. Contrarily, mitral valvuloplasty or ballooning of the mitral valve, in carefully selected patients carries similar long term results and benefits as open heart mitral valve replacement surgery. Aortic and mitral valvuloplasty can be done minimally invasive in the catheterization lab
